Events The River Bend Astronomy Club is a band of like-minded individuals who, despite occcasional clouds and wind and rain and even a twister once, return skyward again and again. We meet at least once a month to do just that. The public is welcome to attend these gatherings which provide an enjoyable opportunity to view celestial objects, see a variety of optical instruments in action, and have refreshments and fun.
OUTREACH The River Bend Astronomy Club is committed to astromomy outreach in the community. Our club is registered with NASA as a member of the Night Sky Network. This program brings the wonders of the universe to the public with many different outreach programs and materials. Members of the River Bend Astronomy Club present learning workshops using these NASA kits to teach both young and old all about the mysteries of our universe, basic optics, and methods astronomers use to learn about the universe. See our Calendar page for an upcoming event, and come learn all about NASA's Night Sky Network and your universe. If you are interested in having our club do an astronomy outreach workshop for your school, camp, or other group, please contact Jeff and Terry Menz at rbac@riverbendastro.org.
SPECIAL EVENTS In addition to our regular meetings, the club schedules several public events throughout the year. Times and locations may vary. Eclipses, meteor showers, favorable planetary positions and more offer an excuse to share with others what we like best—observing. Watch this site for notices of coming events.
LECTURES Another club service to the community is public speaking. Through the years, members have donated time to lecture organizations, schools and youth groups. We enjoy promoting astronomy, whatever the occasion, whatever the age level.
ASTRONOMY DAY Since 2001, the club has participated in Astronomy Day, an international festival celebrating the science and wonder of astronomy. Past Astronomy Day events have featured a planet walk, lectures, games, crafts, exhibits and displays, solar and nighttime observation, and food. In 2003 we were privileged to host the event in conjunction with the Children's Museum of Edwardsville. Mother Nature tested our mettle that day when a funnel cloud nearly touched down within sight of the museum. But later, the skies cleared and we all dried off in time to welcome a crowd and raffle off a new telescope.
Looked up lately? We hope you can join us at our next event. And don't forget your umbrella!
