Events The River Bend Astronomy Club is a band of like-minded individuals who, despite occcasional clouds and wind and rain and even a twister once, return skyward again and again. We meet at least once a month to do just that. The public is welcome to attend these gatherings which provide an enjoyable opportunity to view celestial objects, see a variety of optical instruments in action, and have refreshments and fun.
SPECIAL EVENTS In addition to our regular meetings, the club schedules several public events throughout the year. Times and locations may vary. Eclipses, meteor showers, favorable planetary positions and more offer an excuse to share with others what we like best—observing. Watch this site for notices of coming events. LECTURES Another club service to the community is public speaking. Through the years, members have donated time to lecture organizations, schools and youth groups. We enjoy promoting astronomy, whatever the occasion, whatever the age level. ASTRONOMY DAY Since 2001, the club has participated in Astronomy Day, an international festival celebrating the science and wonder of astronomy. Past Astronomy Day events have featured a planet walk, lectures, games, crafts, exhibits and displays, solar and nighttime observation, and food. In 2003 we were privileged to host the event in conjunction with the Children's Museum of Edwardsville. Mother Nature tested our mettle that day when a funnel cloud nearly touched down within sight of the museum. But later, the skies cleared and we all dried off in time to welcome a crowd and raffle off a new telescope. Looked up lately? We hope you can join us at our next event. And don't forget your umbrella!
